unintentional city

Between the buildings there’s another city.

Laneways. Backyards. In-between spaces that nobody planned.

These places are alive, layered with remnants of past inhabitants, patched and repurposed, shaped by time and use, and often reclaimed by nature.

Their character shifts with the weather, the time of day, and the turning of the seasons.

Experiencing them can evoke contradiction: enclosure and openness, belonging and unease.

The unexpected is ordinary.

Unintentional City is a new body of work about these overlooked places: quiet, human-scaled, where nature perseveres even in dense cities, shaping the built world.
