Walking down a Toronto street, I stopped at a wrought iron fence to look down into a small front garden. It was lush and a little wild, crowded with different leaf shapes and a few flower buds pushing through. One of the many small patches of green space that grows in the city - a little garden, doing as it pleased.

A narrow path led the eye through, right to a wrought iron gate set into an old stone wall, its top half caught in the leaves. Backlit by the sun, the gate cast its own shadow across the path, a small, quiet threshold that felt like it was hiding something lovely just out of view.

A narrow laneway between a parking structure and a row of garages in Leslieville — what caught my eye was the shadow of an entire tree cast across the wall, though only a single branch is visible above. The colours of the leaves, the light, and that compressed feeling of moving through a narrow space all conspired to make something rather extraordinary out of something rather ordinary — the way itself was quite striking.
